Phobias can be a result of trauma, such as being stung by a bee or it can be a learned response, watching a family member scream and run away from a spider.
Sometimes people are embarassed by their phobias because they think others may find them silly or trivial - but extreme fear is never trivial. Terror and fear can be debilitating - even if your fear is of something as simple as zips.
Throughout our life we learn to be afraid of certain things and situations. It is fear that protects us from situations that can harm us such as fire. Sometimes it is right to feel fear because it protects us.
Most people don't particularly like spiders or snakes but they are not phobic. Their fear is proportionate. When your fear becomes disproportionate it becomes a problem.
You may use distraction and avoidance techniques. Your rational mind may be telling you that it is silly and irrational but your subconscious mind has been programmed through fear and it wants to protect you. It will continue to do this until you change the belief of your subconscious mind.
